Resolutions 2

Following on from my previous whatever it was about New Year resolutions;

It is true that New Year resolutions are synonymous with enormous inevitable failure on an epic scale. Millions of whimsical photos are shared reposted and liked on social media every January. (Thankfully they aren’t emailed as much these days). And, they all show a humorous failed attempt at being healthier or doing something more or less, very often there’s a photo caption about an unused gym membership or similar.

Cutting a long story short; someone gains a few pounds over the year, a couple more over the Christmas holidays and then it gets to New Year’s Eve. They make resolutions to lose weight, eat less junk food, and drink less beer, fewer takeaways and so on.

So why is there such an expectation they will fail?

I think the reason is; people try to deal with the symptoms of their lifestyle, which is very difficult to do unless they change their lifestyle first.

People aren’t getting to the root of the problem; they need to find the cornerstone. If someone is sat on the couch all evening, drinking beer and eating pizza, I don’t see the beer and pizza as being the root problem. It is being sat on the couch all evening.

If the person was less sedentary, I’ll pick something other than cycling for a change. Maybe running, they certainly wouldn’t be eating many pizzas or drinking much beer before a run. Even if it does not alter their entire lifestyle, it may do enough for them to become healthy enough that they limit their intake to moderate amount.
